BMW Canterbury, a premier car dealership, recently underwent a major refurbishment to enhance its showroom experience. As part of the relaunch, the dealership’s designers wanted to integrate greenery to give the sleek architecture a more inviting atmosphere. They turned to Indoor Plant Solutions to develop custom wall units featuring artificial plants and moss alongside a striking statement plant display.

The Challenge
BMW Canterbury’s project presented several conundrums. The first, very glaring challenge was its glass-dominant space. The dealership’s architecture posed a significant challenge because excessive sunlight and heat could potentially damage live plants.
Secondly, operating in a functional dealership meant installation had to be carefully planned. We needed to avoid disrupting daily operations while working around high-value vehicles in the showroom.
In addition, the project called for bespoke wall-mounted moss units and large-scale custom pots with multiple plants in each. This design required carefully selecting plants that complement each other and waterproofed pots to avoid leakage.
Our Solution
We approached the project with precision and innovation:
- Prototyping & Customisation: Our team developed multiple prototypes of the wall-mounted moss units, featuring different design variations and colour palettes. We ensured our designs aligned with the client’s vision before full-scale production commenced.
- Handcrafted Installation: Approximately 100 custom moss wall units were handcrafted at our depot before being transported and installed on-site with minimal disruption.
- Heat-Resistant Plant Selection: Given the extensive glass structure, we carefully selected a range of heat-tolerant indoor plants that could thrive in direct sunlight, ensuring long-term viability.
- Waterproofing & Durability: Large, custom pots were specially designed and waterproofed to prevent water leakage, ensuring indoor use suitability.
- Statement Feature Plant: A stunning 4-metre olive tree was selected and strategically placed as the centrepiece of the showroom, complementing the dealership’s modern aesthetic.
- Premium Finishing Touches: Instead of traditional mulch, preserved moss was used as a top dressing for the custom pots, adding a sophisticated and polished finish aligned with BMW’s luxury branding.
- Seamless Installation: Our team conducted the installation outside trade hours to avoid disrupting daily operations and ensure a smooth execution.
