Chatswood Chase

Bringing Greenery to Chatswood Chase’s $625M Refurbishment

Background & Challenge

Chatswood Chase, one of Sydney’s premier retail destinations, recently completed a $625-million refurbishment to elevate the shopping experience. As part of this transformation, the centre wanted to introduce greenery throughout its spaces to enhance the customer experience, create a welcoming atmosphere and improve indoor air quality.

We were engaged to supply and install over 550 plants across multiple areas, including the B2 Carpark Vestibule, Coles Lobby, Ground Floor, Level 1 (including valet) and spare carpark areas. This is a two-stage project: Stage 1, which we have completed, covered the Ground Floor and Level 1, while Stage 2 will include Level 2 and Level 3, where we are set to deliver all plants, including large and medium-sized Waddles & Loobs (Charcoal).

The project presented a complex challenge: coordinating installation across multiple levels and integrating a diverse mix of statement pots, all while working in a construction environment alongside other trades completing their work before the centre’s official opening. This required careful planning, with all our staff fully trained and compliant with safety requirements, holding white cards and wearing appropriate PPE throughout the installation.

Our Solution

Our team worked closely with Australian Native Landscapes, Vicinity Centres and Multiplex Construction to deliver a seamless installation from start to finish. Every pot was prepared with three coats of Crommelin Exterior Grade Waterproofing, with 24-hour curing between coats and fitted with sealed water reservoirs to keep plants hydrated without risk of water damage. Playground mulch was applied as a top dressing to complete the look, and each pot was carefully wrapped and transported using our own trucks to protect it during delivery. To ensure balance and safety, pots were filled with ballast material to avoid top-heaviness.

The project required careful planning of product selection and placement, featuring a mix of white Air Bullets and Air Furores, bronze Woodfire Bullets and Duralite Deep Concrete Bowls in varying sizes. Different plant species were carefully workshopped and approved in advance to ensure suitability for each location.

The installation was carried out over two days. The first day involved an intensive 18-hour shift to position the majority of the heavy pots and complete the main groundwork. The second day, which lasted 10.5 hours, focused on final touches, last-minute adjustments and ensuring every plant and pot was perfectly placed. Despite the challenges posed by the pots, which ranged in weight from 100 to 300 kilograms, the installation ran smoothly with no broken or scratched pots and no operational issues, demonstrating the careful planning and expertise of our team.

Benefits

The result is a transformed retail environment that is calming, inviting and visually engaging. Indoor greenery helps shoppers feel more connected to their surroundings while improving air quality and reducing background noise in busy spaces. Strategically placed statement pots and plants create visual interest, highlight key areas and reflect a modern, thoughtful approach to design. The installation also supports staff wellbeing, helping retail teams feel more energised and focused while working in these spaces.
