Elevating Contemporary Educational Spaces with Dynamic Plant Design
Background & Challenge
Macquarie University, ranked in the top 1% globally (QS and Times 2025), is committed to serving, engaging and empowering students and staff. Its vision focuses on creating dynamic, thriving learning environments that support wellbeing, collaboration and community.
The university approached Indoor Plant Solutions to enhance a key area in their new Wally’s Walk building. They envisioned a welcoming space that would promote student wellbeing, encourage connection and complement the building’s contemporary architecture. With Indoor Plant Solutions sharing the university’s focus on wellbeing and productivity, this project was a natural partnership.
The challenge was introducing greenery into a busy, high-traffic area while delivering tangible benefits such as improved focus, reduced stress and enhanced air quality. The column-mounted plant installations required careful planning and coordination, including working at height with long ladders, while ensuring minimal disruption to students and staff moving through the space.
The team was also tasked with designing and installing a low-maintenance, visually cohesive plant solution that seamlessly integrated with the architecture and would make a lasting impact on everyone who used the space.
Our Solution
To bring this vision to life, Indoor Plant Solutions developed a strategic plant integration plan that considered scale, spatial flow and the architectural features of the Wally’s Walk space.
Eighty plants were carefully selected and positioned to create a cohesive, visually engaging environment. Oversized matte white Air Bullet planters with large feature plants created a welcoming atmosphere and defined the space. In contrast, medium and low-height plants were layered in smaller vessels to add variety and texture without interrupting openness. Trailing species in column-mounted Indoor Plant Solutions Array pots also introduced vertical greenery, softening the architecture and adding depth to the space.
Plant selection played a key role in achieving both aesthetic and functional goals. Resilient species, including Monstera, Rhapis Palm, Strelitzia Nicolai, Dracaena Happy Plant, Ficus Burgundy, Ficus Elastica Tineke and Kentia Palm, were chosen for their suitability to indoor conditions, low-maintenance requirements, and ability to thrive under varying light and airflow.
Every planter was fitted with sub-irrigation to maintain consistent soil moisture, reduce water use and simplify ongoing care, while top dressings retained moisture, regulated temperature and suppressed algae. These additions ensured a polished, professional presentation.
Collaboration with the university team was key to a smooth installation. The Indoor Plant Solutions technicians carefully coordinated around high-traffic periods, working in phases from our Silverwater nursery to streamline delivery and placement. Strict WHS protocols were maintained throughout, ensuring the safety of staff, students and visitors while preserving the integrity and impact of the installation.
Featured Products & Focus
A key focus of the Macquarie University installation was the innovative use of column-mounted solutions and premium planters to maximise visual impact, functionality and long-term sustainability. Column-mounted Array pots introduced vertical greenery that complemented the architecture without disrupting air circulation or the flow of students through the space. The oversized matte white Air Bullet planters anchored larger feature plants, creating focal points and guiding movement in the high-traffic Wally’s Walk area.
Our team’s meticulous planning and installation ensured each planter was correctly positioned and integrated with sub-irrigation systems, maintaining consistent moisture and reducing maintenance requirements. Every step, from pre-preparation at the Silverwater nursery to on-site placement, was executed with precision, reflecting our strong commitment to quality, safety and client collaboration. The combination of thoughtful planter selection, robust column-mounted solutions and integrated watering systems allowed the greenery to thrive while complementing the building’s contemporary design.
Benefit
The transformation of the Wally’s Walk space has been widely praised by students, staff and visitors alike. Even during installation, the immediate impact was clear; students commented on the calming atmosphere the greenery created while staff enjoyed how the space naturally encouraged gatherings and collaboration. Purposeful repetition, layering and height variation created a visually engaging and restorative environment that supports focus, productivity and overall wellbeing.
Together, they enhanced the natural aesthetics of the space while improving acoustics and reducing ambient noise, creating a more comfortable and inviting learning environment. Thoughtful design and durable planter systems ensure the installation remains low-maintenance, resilient and visually cohesive over time, allowing the space to deliver its intended benefits consistently with minimal upkeep.
Scientific research supports the impact observed at Macquarie University. According to the UTS “Indoor Plants Work” study, indoor plants reduce stress, enhance concentration and cognitive performance, improve air quality and contribute to overall wellbeing. In an educational setting, this translates to better student engagement, focus and performance, demonstrating that carefully integrated greenery is more than decorative, it actively enriches learning spaces.
The Wally’s Walk installation illustrates how our purpose-driven approach to plant design can turn high-traffic areas into vibrant, restorative environments that enhance the campus experience for everyone.
By focusing on durable, purpose-built planters and innovative mounting systems, the project demonstrates how Indoor Plant Solutions creates indoor environments that are visually striking while being low-maintenance and supportive of wellbeing and productivity.
