Award-Winning Sustainable Design for Tour de Cure
At Indoor Plant Solutions, sustainability isn’t just a goal – it’s the foundation of how we design, install and maintain every project. The Tour de Cure installation showcases our commitment to reducing environmental impact through intentional design, operational excellence and measurable results.
Over 150 ex-rental plants were revitalised through our Twice as Green initiative, while seven standard-range pots and client-owned tambour units were repurposed, significantly cutting new production and preventing landfill waste.
This circular approach results in less waste, reduced energy consumption and lower carbon emissions – all while delivering a restorative workplace aligned with Tour de Cure’s mission to inspire hope and fund cancer research.
Use of Sustainable Materials
Sustainability guided every design and material choice throughout the project.
Our horticultural technicians restored more than 150 plants to full health, extending the life of existing stock, eliminated unnecessary new plant production and keeping valuable materials out of landfill. All containers were selected for durability and recyclability, supporting a circular lifecycle where materials can be reused, refurbished or recycled.
Each planter included a sub-irrigation system to improve water efficiency, minimise evaporation and support consistent plant health. The use of low-maintenance species further reduced water and fertiliser needs, while daylight-aligned servicing and manual tools helped limit energy consumption.
Through thoughtful material selection and a resource-conscious approach, the installation achieved a balance between visual appeal, functionality and environmental responsibility – proving that innovative design can extend sustainability across every stage of a plantscape’s lifecycle.
Resource Efficiency and Waste Management
Resource efficiency was at the heart of this installation.
Revitalising existing greenery avoided unnecessary plant production and reduced carbon impacts associated with transport and manufacturing. Surplus or non-viable plants were composted or repurposed for other installations, ensuring minimal waste.
Sub-irrigation systems, low-maintenance species and continuous monitoring of plant health reduced the need for frequent watering, fertiliser application and labour-intensive maintenance. These processes align with Indoor Plant Solutions Environmental Management System and ISO 9001:2016 Quality Management framework, ensuring every project is delivered efficiently and sustainably.
The outcome: measurable reductions in waste, energy and water consumption – without compromising visual quality or operational performance.
Innovation in Sustainability
For Indoor Plant Solutions, innovation means delivering environmental responsibility alongside social value.
The entire Tour de Cure installation was donated and continues to be maintained at no cost, reflecting our commitment to meaningful community partnerships. Through the Twice as Green initiative, more than 150 ex-rental plants were given new life, helping create a low-impact interior that supports wellbeing, focus and environmental stewardship.
Our trained technicians apply replicable, scalable methods for sustainable plant care, contributing to a broader industry movement toward circular design. We also actively share our expertise with clients, suppliers and the community to promote eco-conscious sourcing and measurable sustainability outcomes.
This approach demonstrates that business, community and the environment can thrive together when sustainability is embedded in every decision.
Long-Term Visibility and Adaptability
The Tour de Cure plantscape was designed for longevity and long-term performance.
Each planter features sub-irrigation technology that optimises water use, while low-maintenance species thrive with minimal intervention. Fortnightly maintenance is delivered by our trained horticultural technicians, following a documented Horticultural Maintenance Plan under our Environmental and Quality Management Systems.
Regular servicing includes tailored watering, pruning, plant rotation, container cleaning and soil health monitoring – all coordinated to minimise energy use and workplace disruption. Containers are designed for reuse and recyclability, with options for refurbishment or recycling at end-of-life to further extend their lifecycle.
Through ongoing training, audits and environmentally conscious practices, the installation stays vibrant, resilient and resource-efficient, providing long-lasting ecological and social benefits.
What the Future Holds
We have reflected the Twice as Green initiative nationwide across some of other installs nationwide including Starlight, Guide Dogs Australia, reinforcing that a circular approach to plant management delivers environmental, social and operational benefits across industries.
The Tour de Cure project demonstrates that with structured systems, thoughtful design and genuine care, greenery can be both restorative and sustainable – enriching workplaces while protecting the planet.
At Indoor Plant Solutions, we believe that every plantscape should give back more than it takes, creating living environments that nurture people, enhance performance and support the world around us.
